Aldershot Lido is reopening

Council commits to reopening Lido for the summer

Aldershot Lido looks set for a summer of fun after Rushmoor Borough Council committed to spending over £200,000 on opening it for the summer.

The Cabinet, meeting on Tuesday, 20 April, agreed to spend £110,000 on pre-season works and £100,000 on operating costs, so the popular open-air pool can reopen this summer.

After a year spent mostly at home, and the current uncertainty over summer holiday plans, it means residents now have the lure of the beautifully clear water and sunshine at the Lido to look forward to.

The Lido was not able to open last summer because of the pandemic, but with lockdown restrictions easing, the council will be offering a summer season for swimmers and sunbathers from the start of July until the beginning of September.

Places for People Leisure (PFPL), who were recently awarded a contract by the council to continue operating the Aldershot Pools Complex until the new Farnborough Leisure Centre is built, will also be running the Lido for the council.

Before opening, the Lido will need a replacement water circulation pump and new Astro Turf around the pool side, and pool tank repairs, emptying and refilling will need to be carried out.

Once open the lido will complement the facilities now open again at Aldershot Pools and Fitness Centre, which includes top range gym equipment transferred from Farnborough Leisure Centre.

Rushmoor Borough Council’s Head of Operational Services, James Duggin, said: "We know that the re-opening of the Lido will provide a real boost for our local community and lift spirits after all the trials of the pandemic.

"This is a much-loved facility and we are keeping our fingers crossed that that we are able to enjoy some fine weather this summer at the Lido. With the uncertainty about travelling aboard, the re-opening of the Lido will give our residents the chance to enjoy what it has to offer close to home.”
