Body Combat Review by Christina

Hi, I’m Christina. I work at Places Leisure Ripley. I have been a member since I was 16 years old and have trained with my mum ever since. I loved the classes that much that I got a job helping to motivate people to start their fitness journeys.

My favourite class has always been Body Combat! The first class I tried as a member. So, I have decided to review this workout class.

When I first did Combat, I had no idea what it would be like. I had just been told by my mum that it was a high impact martial arts class. Sounded very serious! Yet after the first few classes I realised it was more about having fun as well as working out! It’s a killer class but as most instructors will tell you, you can SMILE!!!

What is it?

This fiercely energetic program is inspired by martial arts such as karate, boxing, taekwondo, tai chi and muay thai. Strike punch kick and kata your way through calories to superior cardio fitness.

First impressions

You walk in with all the regulars in their spots which may appear a little daunting for a new comer as their ready for action. You just need to find a spot and listen for the instructor to ask if anyone is new. If you are they will come over introduce themselves and have a chat about higher and lower impact options. You don’t need any weights, just yourself and a water bottle ready for the music to kick start.

20 minutes in

If you want an all over body cardio workout this is a good one! You’ll work your abs with running man crunches, shoulders with punching combos and your legs with jump kicks and side kicks! 20 minutes in and you’ll find yourself sweating and singing along with the tracks! Even shouting out loud with the instructors, who encourage you to get involved with song lyrics and catch phrases if you can talk!
My first class I had to skip a track or two and stand at the back as I couldn’t keep up. But now I’m shouting along with the rest of them showing that my fitness levels improved the more I went.

45 minutes in

You don’t realise how quickly the time goes as you’re that focused on trying to follow the instructor’s movements as you battle through the last 15 minutes of sweat! Then before you know it you are ready for the ab track and cool down.

The stretching

After all that jumping around you can’t wait to grab a matt and stretch out your muscles ready for the shoulder and leg aches the next day, these show you’ve worked hard the day before.

Review time

I give these classes a 4.5/5!

I love the motivation and enthusiasm from the instructors. Everyone is gripped and concentrating on going the right way. But if you don’t, no one says anything and you just try to catch up. You have the same routine for 12 weeks so if your unsure as to why others know the routine and you don’t it’s because they’ve probably done it 3 times a week and know it off by heart!

The music sometimes lets the releases down for me as I prefer older music to chart music. They generally do a mix of all different genres but it doesn’t matter about the music it’s all about getting active!
I always recommend this class as I’ve done it for 9 years and it’s still as fun and as great a calorie burner as ever!!
