Sophie Carrigill, British Basketball Player, explains how training at Aston-cum-Aughton Leisure Centre has helped her move forward in her sporting career
We love to hear your comments about how our Place has helped you, whatever your situation. Sophie Carrigill has been kind enough to share her story with us about why she loves training at Aston-cum-Aughton Leisure Centre.
“I’m Sophie Carrigill, I play wheelchair basketball for Great Britain. I was in a car accident when I was 16 years old that left me paralysed from the waist down, but it hasn’t stopped me from wanting to be active and still be sporty.
I took that passion and drive for sport and started playing wheelchair basketball and quickly progressed to playing for the Great Britain team. As a squad we have had a lot of recent success... at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games we came 4th and we are currently World Championship Silver Medallists and European Championship Silver Medallists.
I’ve loved being able to train at Aston, it’s helpful because it’s so close to home so if I need to get a quick extra session in on the hand bike or a circuit for example I can do so easily. It’s supported my training going towards the Tokyo Paralympics which are less than a year away!”
