Dan's Story

Dan didn’t think he would ever be taking part in gym challenges until he started his fitness journey at Maltby Leisure Centre.

Dan Morgan, aged 32 years’ old lives with Cerebral Palsy which affects his body movement, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflex, posture and balance. He has found that exercise helps combat the effects of his condition and is now a regular gym – goer at Maltby Leisure Centre.

Member, Dan tells us about his fitness journey; “I started using Maltby Leisure Centre over a year ago. Being a wheel chair user I didn’t know if I would be able to use the machines or even get around the gym, but there were no issues at all. The whole team have been hugely supportive and are always on hand to help me. They have adapted equipment to meet my needs and with their help I have been able to carry out strength training, such as deadlifts and functional exercises which have helped me improve my strength to carry out every day-to-day tasks. Within a year of attending the gym, I have seen a huge improvement - I can now stand with support which was not possible for me a year ago!

I am even taking part in the regular gym challenges, and with the help of GP referral Coordinator Dan Murray I actually won one! I never thought I would be able to achieve my goals and take part in the gym competitions, proving that anything is possible through hard work, no matter what people tell you”.

Going to the gym is a highlight of my week! I’ve gotten to know and befriend many of the regulars and staff who offer plenty of encouragement and help to create a cheerful, welcoming and friendly atmosphere."
