Stay active and mobile at home

Home-based mobility exercises

With government guidelines around staying at home during the coronvirus pandemic even stricter for those over 70 or with an underlying health condition, you or one of your loved ones may be finding it hard to stay active at the moment.

That's why we've put together some resources on our app and below for you to use at home, working on strength, flexibility and mobility to help you stay active and well during this period of disruption.

Places Locker

If you don't already have our free Places Locker app, now is a great time to download it and get familiar with what it has to offer. The 'Keep Moving' Workout of the Week has been designed specifically for older adults. New exercises are released each Monday to keep your routine fresh and interesting.

The app also lets you track lots of household activities that all add up to your daily exercise. From gardening to ironing, it's good to be able to track what you're doing and the progress you've made.

Places Locker is free to download from the App Store (for iPhones) and Google Play (for android phones). You can link it to your membership by using the same email address.

Exercise videos

Our fitness team experts have also created these mobility and stretching videos for you to do from the comfort of your own home - or garden!

Plus, we've been working with our partner, Shape Master, to bring you these home-based videos from their physiotherapists, demonstrating gentle movements for mobility. AgeUk have also put together some great videos with an information leaflet to help as well.

Physiotherapist, Rachel Young, demonstrates chair-based exercises that mirror the Chest & Legs machine and the stretch and pace of the seated climber.

Physiotherapist, Hannah Wright, demonstrates four routines that can be performed in the standing position or sitting down. Careful with those jabs!

Physiotherapist, Rachel Young, demonstrates exercises that can be performed whilst on your sofa or on the floor. We love that Rachel's dog Rusty wants to get in on the action too!

Physiotherapist, Rachel Young, has created home based exercises that mirror the movements of the Shapemaster upright Fly & Thigh & Tricep Dip/ Leg Curl machines.

Physiotherapist Hannah Wright, assisted by Karen, demonstrates lower limb exercises that can be performed around the house and even in the kitchen.

However you choose to stay active, during this time of uncertainty, we hope you are safe and well, and look forward to welcoming you back to our centres soon.
